  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 9

    I just got back from a lovely luncheon at the Oakland House. What a beautiful day to visit a beautiful old house in the Affton area. It seems like time is starting to pass quickly now that spring is here and Easter is over. But we have a lot of places to go this spring and early summer. I hope you will consider joining us for these trips.

    Don’t forget to sign up for Warm Springs Ranch trip on Monday, May 9. The bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. We will eat lunch and then go to visit the Clydesdales. And I think there will be some young ponies there as well! The cost of the tour is $16.00 and transportation is $5.00. You will also have to buy your lunch and might want to bring a snack for the bus. We will not be back until 6:00 p.m., at the earliest.

    All are invited to attend the Legacy Banquet on Saturday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. and don’t forget to invite some friends in the church who do not normally attend our activities. Guests are also welcome. The Banquet will be held in the Dining Room, and the cost for this great evening is only $12.00; you will pay at the door. Signups end on May 8, so we can get the proper amount of food. If your name is on the list on May 8, you will be expected to pay even if you can’t attend because we will already have ordered food. Dress is casual.

    Our June activities are the Heritage Museum in St. Charles on Thursday, June 9 at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be at Lewis and Clark’s. And you are invited to celebrate my birthday with me on Friday, June 24, at Josephine’s Tea Room in Godfrey, Ill. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events and don’t forget to sign up!   • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 8

    Thanks to all who contributed toys and candy, dyed eggs, and assembled Easter baskets for the children of Loaves and Fishes. They were beautiful and each contained a small New Testament and a chocolate cross. Those who helped want to make this an annual event. What a sweet way to bless the children in our community.

    Don’t forget to get bring a check for $22/person for Oakland House. The bus will leave the church at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26. We will tour the house at 11:00 a.m. and eat lunch at noon. The Oakland House is amazing and I’m sure it will be a great day.

    We have two really great events coming up in May. On Monday, May 9 we will go to see the Clydesdales at Warm Springs Ranch with lunch TBA. The cost of the tour is $16 plus you will need money for your lunch and $3 for the bus. This is an all-day trip and we will be leaving at 9:00 a.m.

    I’m hoping you are planning to come to the Legacy Banquet on Saturday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $12 per person. Our guest speaker will be our own Dr. Lowell Donnelley. The entertainment will be amazing!  I have heard that we will be having guest appearances from Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, and several other big names from the 50s, 60s and 70s. You are invited to join us for this fun evening whether you consider yourself a Prime Timer or not. I would love to see some multigenerational fellowship around our tables. Would you come if I promised you a Freddy’s ice cream sandwich for dessert? I know that would get me moving! Hope to see you all there!

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 7

    Easter is right around the corner. When is the last time you dyed Easter eggs? Well, do I have an opportunity for you! On Tuesday, April 12, we will have lunch and then dye eggs and make 20 Easter Baskets for the children at Loaves and Fishes. We need your help to not only put them together but also to provide items to put in them. Easter candy, stuffed animals, small toys like Matchbox cars, Lego people, dolls, bubbles, small story books about Jesus or a small Bible – well, you get the idea!  Let’s bless some kids who are in a place in life where they might feel a little hopeless. Let’s share the hope with them!

    On Tuesday, April 26 we will go to Oakland House in Afton for a house tour and luncheon. The cost is $22. I do not have a departure time yet but will let you know. We must secure our reservations first. We also must pay at the time of making reservations. If you sign up, you will be paid for, but you must bring cash or a check to Fee Fee with you that day. In other words, if you sign up and have not cancelled by 4/15, you must pay whether you go or not, because the church will have already paid for you.

    I hope you are preparing your heart for Easter. Invite your family and neighbors if they do not have a church that they attend. Pastor Zach will have a clear Gospel message and maybe, just maybe, God is counting on you to bring that person to church that day to hear the very good news!

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 6

    On Tuesday, April 12, we will have lunch at 11:30 a.m. and then prepare 20 Easter baskets for the children living at Loaves and Fishes. We will dye Easter eggs and assemble baskets which will include small toys, stuffed animals, and candy. We could use your help even if you can’t come that day. You can pick up some items like Pez dispensers, Matchbox cars, princess figurines, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, books, or any other small toy items.  We will also need LOTS of candy.  If you are near a Dierbergs, some have chocolate crosses available. Even if you cannot attend that day, you can absolutely help with this project.

    On April 26 at 10:00 a.m. we will go to Oakland House for a tour and luncheon. This home in Affton is the country home of Louis A. Benoist and has been restored to its original beauty from 1853.The cost is $22 per person.

    In May, we have two great events planned. We will go to Warm Springs Ranch on May 9 to see the Clydesdales. Then on Saturday night, May 14 we will have our annual Legacy Banquet. Our entertainment will be provided by Ronna, Maggie, Rennae, John, and Dave with a variety of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and our own Lowell Donnelly will give the devotional. You will definitely not want to miss this night.

    I want to encourage you as the pandemic numbers continue to go down and the weather gets better, to resume your small groups and include your friends and neighbors.

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 5

    What a difference a week can make in St. Louis weather! Today is a beautiful 72 degrees, and last week we were awaiting freezing rain, sleet, and snow. While we can’t count on the weather, we can count on our faithful God. While our world seems out of control, God is sovereign and in control. Thank Him for your blessings today and trust Him completely in the days to come.  He is loving and kind and good!

    Our next trip is to the St. Louis Science Center to the OmniMax to see Wings over Water on Friday, March 11. Tickets are $11, but we will probably get a group discount or senior discount. We will leave church at 10:00 a.m. and go to the 11:00 a.m. movie. Afterwards we will go to the Fountain on Locust. Make sure to save room for ice cream!

    The Scott Joplin House tour will be on Monday, March 28, leaving the church at 10:00 a.m. This is a state historic site which features a player piano in the modest flat rented by the king of ragtime and a museum about Scott Joplin’s life. Cost of the tour and museum is $6. Lunch will be at Crown Candy. I challenge you to a BLT!

    Also mark your calendars for Saturday night, May 14 for our Annual Legacy Banquet. We will have great food, great fellowship, and great music!

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 4

    Once again, we have a change of plans for our activities. Instead of going to Warm Springs Ranch on March 11, (since it isn’t open until April), we will go to the Science Center to watch Wings over Water on the Omnimax. The bus will leave at 10:00 a.m. Lunch TBA. I am open to suggestions! The cost will be $11.00 plus lunch.

    I hope you have the Scott Joplin House and lunch on your calendar for March 28! This is a state historic site and features an authentic player piano that fills the house with his melodies as you walk through the flat on Delmar.  There is also a museum which celebrates Joplin’s life. The cost is $6.00, plus lunch.

    Speaking of calendars, here are the tentative plans for the next quarter. Thank you for your patience as we navigate the waters of closed restaurants, staff shortages, and the supply chain. Flexibility is a wonderful quality.

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 3

    It looks like the pandemic is finally waning. I’m hoping that soon I can see you all again face to face. It’s been a challenging season, but we have learned some valuable spiritual lessons during this time. One of those is that our lives are to be lived in community. We need the fellowship, encouragement, and iron sharpening iron in our lives that needs to be done in person. I hope that we haven’t become complacent and are satisfied with watching church in our jammies. It’s time to get back together so we can serve the church and the community.

    I’m looking forward to a very special Valentine’s Day with many of you in a cave. Yes, we are going to Meramec Caverns that day at 10:00 a.m. We will eat lunch and then go on a cave tour.  The tour lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes and the cave is ADA accessible. There is one spot that has a few steps but if you are unable to traverse them, you can remain there, and the group will loop back around to you.

    On Wednesday, February 23 we will meet in the Dining Room at 11:00 a.m. for chili and soup and then watch the movie, American Underdog. This is the story of our own Kurt Warner. Hope to see you then!

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 2

    On Monday, February 14, we will head to Meramec Caverns at 10:00 a.m. We will have lunch and then tour the cave for about an hour and a half, and then head home. This is a great way to spend your Valentine’s Day. The tour cost is $24 plus lunch. PLEASE NOTE – THIS IS A DATE CHANGE FROM OUR ORIGINAL CALENDAR. The cave has reduced hours until February 14 and will not be open on our original date of February 11.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

    I hope you all are keeping up in our reading of Joshua. I don’t know about you, but I am seeing some things I never saw before. So, keep on reading and be strong and courageous!

  • Prime Time – Vol. 62, No. 1

    Happy New Year! Hope you haven’t broken too many of your resolutions yet. I would like to challenge all of you to read the book of Joshua with the entire church. We are only reading one chapter each day, and this will help you to develop the spiritual discipline of reading the Bible every day. It will change your day and your life If you want accountability, contact me about joining a T-group. You will be assigned a day each week to share what the LORD showed you while reading that day’s assigned chapter and then get to hear what your other group members gleaned from their assigned passages. Some of us have been doing this for over a year and love connecting with our group each day through the Marco Polo app on our phone.

    We have made plans for some fun activities for the first quarter of 2022. With the latest Covid surge, we might need to be flexible with these plans, but please add these to your calendar.

    Wednesday, January 12, 11:00 a.m. Sight and Sound Production of Ruth and sandwiches and dessert for lunch. Cost is $6.
    Thursday, January 27, 10:00 a.m. Field House Museum and Zia’s.  Cost is $10 for museum plus your lunch.
    Friday, February 11, 10:00 a.m. Tour of Meramec Caverns and Lunch.  Cost is $24 for tour plus lunch.

  • Prime Time – Vol. 61, No. 25

    In case you didn’t know, I’m a big fan of Christmas. I love the decorations, the food, and friend and family get-togethers. There are so many traditions associated with Christmas, some are obvious and others are not.  Have you ever wondered about the origins of some of these traditions?

    Many of our traditions have pagan origins, but God can use pagan symbols making it His own. “December 25” comes from the pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice, which occurs December 21 or 22. From that date on, the days begin to get longer and so does the amount of light. Jesus is the Light of the World who brings light into a dark world.

    It doesn’t take a stretch of imagination to see the significance of an angel tree topper, as the “angels we have heard on high” who proclaimed the birth of Jesus. And the triangular shape of the Christmas tree points to Jesus, representing the Trinity. Even the lights on the tree point to the Light of the world and our joining together to spread the light.

    Did you know candy canes were originally all white, straight, and called a sugar stick?! The curved crook was added by a choirmaster in 1670 to cause it to resemble a shepherd’s staff. Red stripes were added in the early 20th century to represent the blood and purity of Jesus. While some maintain that the shape is a “J” for Jesus, others claim it is a symbol of The Good Shepherd!

    Traditional red and green Christmas colors point us to Jesus – like those found in evergreen wreaths you hang on your door – green symbolizing the eternal life which Jesus gives us, and red represents the blood that He shed to give us eternal life.

    This year as you open Christmas gifts, remember that even the giving of gifts points us to Jesus. God gave us the best gift ever by sending His Son to earth to provide us with salvation and His wonderful grace. Make sure you display His love and grace and shine your light into the darkness this year at Christmas. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is a gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast,” (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV).
