  • Music Musings – Vol. 62, No. 14

    Final Concert of 2022 Summer Series

    First of all, let me thank you for your support of the concerts we have had this summer. Your attendance and appreciative comments have been so encouraging. It has been interesting to see the varied talents of these gifted artists, from excellent playing and singing, to ventriloquism and blue grass and Southern gospel. And of course, we don’t want to forget the amazing contribution of our handbells and choir as they presented the Patriotic concert.

    Our final concert on July 31 will be presented by The Lesters. This family group of gospel singers is very familiar to our community. The family organized their gospel ministry over 90 years ago and the descending generations have kept it going! While the family lineup has changed through the years, the present group is made up of Brian Lester, his son Jonathan and wife Bailee (along with their children who make an appearance now and then). This family singing group has endured through five generations. Don’t miss this concert. It will be a blessing! Invite friends and neighbors. This is a free concert, but a love offering will be taken.

    Thanks, too, to our Socials Committee who has provided yummy ice cream treats following each concert!

    God Sings Over Us

    Here is a favorite verse of mine:

    “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;

    He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love;

    He will exult over you with loud singing,” (Zephaniah 3:17 ESV).

    God’s love for us is unending. He sings over us to take delight in us.  He sings over us to calm our fears. Think about this: When we sing to God, we are reflecting the image of our Creator, the God who sings over us.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 62, No. 13

    Summer Concert Series Updates:

    July 17 – Doug Mickan – On July 17 we will welcome Doug Mickan to our concert stage for our Sunday Concert Series. Doug is a very talented and entertaining ventriloquist. He will be bringing some of his buddies with him to provide us with a very delightful event! Don’t miss this concert as Doug introduces us to some of his friends who he works with trying to keep them in line. Bring friends, neighbors, and anyone you happen to meet!

    July 24 – The Punches – The Punches family is a Bluegrass group singing the good news of Christ, our Savior. This family travels full time all over the United States and are often featured at Silver Dollar City. All play instruments and sing. They have a love for the Lord and a desire to see souls saved and encouraged. They are fun and uplifting. You are sure to love The Punches. Don’t miss this energetic concert!

    See you Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.  Oh, and don’t forget – we serve ice cream after each concert!

  • Music Musings – Vol. 62, No. 12

    Summer Concert Series

    Here are details for our first two concerts.

    July 3 – Patriotic Concert featuring the Fee Fee Patriotic Choir.

    Highlights include:

    • A medley of music of America written by the great composer Irving Berlin.
    • America the Beautiful played by our handbells.
    • God Bless the U.S.A. sung by our Patrick Kagy.
    • The famous great Wilhousky arrangement of Battle Hymn of The Republic.

    The concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. and held in our Worship Center. Following the concert will be a time of fellowship as we enjoy ice cream treats. Yum! If you love Patriotic music, don’t miss this concert. Invite your friends and family!

    July 10 – The musical duet of Timothy and Hosanna Noble will be returning to present a concert of piano and violin music with their vocal talents.

    Timothy has been giving concerts in our church since he was 15 years old. He and his lovely wife have joined our line-up for the past few years and are a recurring favorite.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 62, No. 10

    Patriotic Choir – Please come join us in singing great songs honoring our country and more importantly seeking God’s guidance to heal our land. We meet on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. in the choir room. Rehearsals run approximately 90 minutes. We need all voices and hope to have a multigenerational voiced choir. We will not rehearse on Father’s Day.

     

    Save the Dates – It is not too soon to plan to attend our Summer Concerts Series every Sunday night in July. Each concert begins at 6:00 p.m. and runs about an hour. Following each concert, we have a time for refreshments and fellowship. These concerts are FREE, but love offerings will be collected.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 62, No. 7

    Patriotic Concert

    Our first Fee Fee Summer Concert will present patriotic music. This concert will be presented on Sunday, July 3, at 6:00 p.m. Plan now to be a part of our “Patriotic Choir.” We will rehearse on Sundays from 2:00-3:30 p.m. in the choir room beginning May 1. There will be no rehearsal on Mother’s Day (May 8) and Father’s Day (June 19). We need your voice.  Please join us as we celebrate our freedom and declare our dependence on the undeniable hand of God on our nation.

    COVID vaccinations will be required to participate, but masks will be optional at this time. Invite your friends to join you in this project. Singers do not need to be members of Fee Fee. Come help us proclaim: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

    Music in 1 Samuel 16

    As we read many passages in the Bible, we find the importance of music. In 1 Samuel 16 David soothes Saul’s discomfort. God allowed an evil spirit to torment Saul. Saul’s attendants found Jesse’s son, David, who played the harp. Saul grew to like David and made him an armor bearer and asked Jesse if David could stay in his employ permanently. So, whenever the evil spirit would trouble Saul, David would play the harp for him and Saul would be soothed. Wow! Here is the power of music at work!

  • Music Musings – Vol. 61, No. 9

    First Concert of the Season is Approaching

    Our Summer Concerts are at our doorstep and the first one is set to go on Sunday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. We will feature music missionary Ken Davidson. Ken currently works at a Chinese university where he oversees a music degree including music technology and recording arts.

    In addition to music missions, Ken is a worship leader, audio engineer, and videographer. Ken is co-founder of Heart Sounds International, which exists to encourage the development of worship music through training native musicians in cultures where Christ followers are restricted or even persecuted.

This is a free event, but reservations are necessary for attending this event. There will be an opportunity to give a love offering and to purchase CDs of the music of various cultures. Please invite friends and other acquaintances to attend this event.

    A Biblical Example of Music Ministry

    1 Samuel 16:21-23 tells the story. David walked bravely carrying his primitive stringed instrument into a place of darkness inhabited by King Saul. Saul was willing to try anything to free himself from the depths of depression that plagued him. As the story unfolds, we find that David’s music touched this tormented man. Saul was relieved as the evil presence departed from him. David’s music not only provided relief, but also brought love from this man for the young shepherd boy whose music had touched his soul.

    When you sing beautifully, or less beautifully, you are making melody in your heart to the Lord. So, sing out to bring joy to the hosts of heaven.

    Christ provides soul music for us. He will fill you with a life free of depression and despair. We, His sheep, need the music of His voice. Let’s rejoice in God together.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 61, No. 8

    Summer Concerts Beginning Soon – Summer Concerts have been scheduled, and again as last year, they are not scheduled back to back as in previous years. Here’s a look at each one:

    May 16 – Ken Davidson – Ken is a music missionary and co-founder of Heart Sounds. This organization exists to encourage the development of worship music through training native musicians, especially in countries where Christ followers are restricted or persecuted.

    June 6 – Kingdom Players – Kingdom Players is a drama group from Lee University. They present skits based on the Bible. The skits are humorous and/or dramatic.

    June 27 – Timothy and Hosanna Noble – Timothy Noble is a piano virtuoso who has been a part of our concert series for about 7 years. His new wife, Hosanna, brings her vocal talent and playing violin.

    July 11 – Charles Graham – Charles is a Gospel singer who has visited Fee Fee dating back to his college days. Charles has attracted many friends worldwide. His singing is powerful, as is his testimony.

    August 1 – The Lesters – The Lesters are a mainstay for the annual Fee Fee concerts. The family has shared the Good News of the Gospel through song for over 90 years. The present ensemble is a trio comprising of Brian, Jonathan, and Bailee Lester. This trio represents the third and fourth generations of the Lester family.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 60, No. 15

    Concerts – Need Helpers

    For our upcoming concerts on July 26 (The Lesters) and again on August 9 (Timothy and Hosanna Noble), we will need some volunteers to assist with “ticket taking” and ushering. We will need ticket takers at the main door of the Worship Center and also the Welcome Center. Ushers will be needed to ensure social distancing is observed and to point out the boxes that will be used to collect the love offerings. Doors for attendees will open at 5:45 p.m. for each concert so arrive by no later than 5:30 p.m. to be at your post.

    The Songs We Sing

    “Then Deborah and Barack the son of Abinoam sang on that day…,” Joshua 5:1 NASB.

    Music is everywhere in our world today. It is at our fingertips on our various devices. It is hard to comprehend how powerful songs were for people who lived in earlier times. I really don’t know much about the Mongol armies in the 12th century A.D., but I have read that the officers composed their orders in rhyme and used fixed melodies in their delivery. As we read the “Song of Deborah” in Judges 5, we can picture this song being repeated throughout

    Israel as a reminder of God’s miraculous deliverance and all He had done for them.

    Songs can take on a similar role for us as we speak to each other “in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord,” (Ephesians 5:19). Songs provide a language that reminds us of Biblical principles and truths. They help us to remember God’s work in our own lives. They can lift our spirits and help prevent us from being saturated by the sin and corruption in the world.

    Fill your lives with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to teach you, remind you, and inspire you.

    Summer Concert Reminder

    Please remember that you will need to request a ticket to attend the upcoming concerts:

    • The Lesters on July 26
    • Timothy and Hosanna Noble on August 9

    To register go to our website and click on the Summer Concert banner, (or navigate to the Ministries heading and scroll down to Summer Concerts). Click on the green Reserve Tickets button for either or both concerts. Tickets are FREE of charge, but attendees will need a ticket to attend so we comply with the mandated seating limitations. You will have an opportunity to contribute a love offering at each of these concerts. If you do not have a computer are unable to order tickets, please contact the church office and someone will assist you.

    I leave you with a lesser known hymn we recently sang in our 8:30 a.m. July 5 service. The message seems appropriate in this time of stress and uncertainty.

    Summer Concerts

    As you may have guessed, our summer concerts have taken a hit this year with the stay-at-home order. We had originally scheduled four concert events this year and planned to be spread out over the summer (one each month) rather than having consecutive weekly events. That being said – our May and June concerts have been canceled. However, we have The Lesters concert scheduled for July 26, and Timothy and Hosanna Noble are set to be here on August 9. We will proceed with these plans with the realization that proper precautions will be in place for each event. All safety recommendations for attendees will be set as we come closer to the concert dates.

    Singing…

    To sing or NOT to sing. As we are coming to grips with the issue of singing during this pandemic, we have become aware of the endangerment this activity can have on both producers and consumers.  We will work throughout this unusual season of time to protect everyone from existing dangers.

    An old Walt Whitman poem came to my mind while thinking about the luxury of singing. Though I feel unqualified to analyze the message, I love that this poet chose to use the idea of “songs” and “singing” to depict various characters singing their own “songs,” blending together in one unifying chorus that is America in his poem I Hear America Singing.

    I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear.

    Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be

    blithe and strong.

    The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam.

    The mason singing his as he makes ready for work,

    or leaves off work.

    The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat,

    The deckhand singing on the steamboat deck.

    The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench,

    The hatter singing as he stands,

    The wood-cutter’s song,

    the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning,

    or at noon intermission or at sundown,

    This delicious singing of the mother,

    or the young wife at work, or the girl sewing or washing,

    Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,

    The day what belongs to the day –

    at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
