  • Bible Study Corner – Vol. 63, No. 1

Bible studies are back in full swing, and something is available for everyone. We have Bible Study for all ages on Sundays at 9:45 a.m.  Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. we have AWANA for our children; plus youth small groups, adult Bible Study in the Dining Room, and Women’s Bible study in the Fellowship Hall under the chapel. Let Gloria know if you need help finding a place to plug in.

  • A Word From Our Prayer Warriors – Vol. 63, No. 1

Do you need some ideas to direct your prayer time on those snowy and wintery days so typical of January? Find a comfortable chair, grab your favorite hot beverage, slip on a warm sweater, and have a Personal Prayer Retreat!

    • Read a short book from the Bible: Mark, Ephesians, Philippians or 1 John. Talk to the Lord about what you are reading as you go. Share with Him what you feel when you read His words. Confess any sins He reveals. Let Him know what encourages, challenges, confuses, or stresses you as you hear His heart through this portion of Scripture.
    • Play a worship CD and sing your worship to God.
    • Pray some of the great prayers of all time. You might start with the Psalms or John 17. Use Google to look at Great Prayers or Famous Prayers. If you find you can’t pray parts of the prayer, sincerely stop, and talk to God about it. Ask Him to search your heart, to show you why it’s difficult for you to pray the part in question.
    • Ask the Lord to refresh you spiritually and physically. Prayerfully select Scripture from the following: Ps 23:2-3, 62:1-5, 91:1, Prov. 11:25, Is 30:15, Mt 11:28-29, Acts 3:19, Heb 4:1-11. Sit and meditate on the verses, letting each word or phrase soak in. Ask God’s Spirit to let you see and experience all He has for you from these Scriptures.
    • Bring a specific burden to the Lord and ask Him for wisdom, comfort, perspective, direction, correction, or help with it. Tell Him exactly how you feel, even if you feel angry, discouraged, confused, or skeptical. Invite Him to speak to you about your concern. Take time with this. Heart-to-heart conversations are not to be hurried.
    • Spend time in intercession for those whom you have committed to pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to pray for them. He may lead you to intercede for their spiritual, mental, physical, emotional, or relational lives. Linger over the things God shows you to pray about and that seem especially significant.
    • Ask God what He would like to talk to you about, and then just listen. Let Him pick the topic for a change. Write down what you believe He is saying so that you can reflect on it and respond to it.
    • Make notes or journal about what was most significant or enjoyable about what you and God have shared together. Keep these notes to reflect upon in the future.1

If you follow all or some of these steps, you will find that the prayer concerns we normally mention here have been included in your prayers.

Have a happy, prayerful, and blessed 2023.

  • Music Musings – Vol. 63, No. 1

Hymn of the MonthO For a Thousand Tongues to Sing

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing was written by Charles Wesley in 1739 to commemorate the first anniversary of his conversion. The hymn was inspired by a remark from his friend, Peter Bohler: “If I had a thousand tongues, I would praise Christ with them all.” Listen to the following arrangement of this beautiful hymn: https://youtu.be/4umCYumsB0g

    Place Choir in Your Future!
    1. Choir will give you an opportunity to serve.
    2. You will help produce good congregational singing.
    3. You will share the joy of the music.
    4. Be part of diversity. We need all kinds of voices. It is God honoring for multi-cultural fellowship. The choir needs to reflect ALL ages working together.

Our choir needs laborers. Come and sing in our 8:30 a.m. service. When the choir exits – go have breakfast and return for Bible study and 11:00 a.m. worship. You will be blessed and more importantly you will be a blessing!  Rehearsals are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Monday evenings. Also, it would be possible to get score copies and rehearsal recordings. There is “a place in the choir” for you. Listen to the following:

  • Prime Time – Vol. 63, No. 1

It’s a new year and a new beginning. I hope you have made a commitment to be “all in” serving the Lord this year.  As always, the seniors have some fun activities planned for this year, plus a service project for the quarter. January will be filled with movies!

First, we are going to the Science Center OmniMax on Thursday, January 12 at 10:00 a.m. We will watch the movie, Born to be Wild. This is the true story of two individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping orphaned animals return to the wild. Cost for seniors is $9. We will have lunch afterwards at Zia’s on the Hill with an opportunity to visit the Missouri Bakery. Remember, the bakery only takes cash so be prepared. Don’t forget to sign up in the Connection Center.

On Monday, January 30, we will be watching a movie in our Dining Room. Join us at 11:00 a.m. and have a lunch of sandwiches, chips and dessert for $7. If it is available, we will watch the movie I Heard the Bells. The film tells the story of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the tragic and inspirational events that led him to write the poem, “Christmas Bells,” which would later become the Christmas carol, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Sign up so that we can plan for lunch.

I pray that your New Year is off to a great start and that this will be a year of great spiritual growth for you and your family.

  • Heart of Worship – Vol. 63, No. 1

I love the beginning of a new year! It brings with it a grace to renew promises to ourselves or even start new ones. At the kick off to any new year, there seems to be an abundance of new dreams, new opportunities, and the hope to accomplish something you never have before. Unfortunately, life gets busy. It’s hard to keep up with everything, and sometimes our new goals for ourselves somehow get lost or forgotten. If you have ever experienced this, like I do, I want to encourage you today!

Galatians chapter 6 talks about reaping what we sow. Looking a little deeper, Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.” James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it a great joy whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance, and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.”

Friends, God wants us to persevere! He designed us to rely on Him and push through, even when it’s hard. I challenge you this year to go after the dreams God has given you. The ones that lay dormant. The ones you haven’t visited in a while. The life changing ideas you’ve been sitting on. And after a few weeks or months in when it gets challenging, push into God and lean on the Faithful One who gave you that idea in the first place. Remember, He is the author and finisher of our faith. I am praying and believing with you that the gifts He’s given you to bring forth His glory – WILL happen through you this year!

  • Family Front – Vol. 62, No. 25

    It’s Winter!

I hope you are keeping safe and warm in this winter weather! Spend some good family time together and thank God for his blessing of life and love during this season.

    New Year!

We are beginning a new year—can you believe we are starting 2023?! Do you ever make New Year’s resolutions? I used to in the past then never kept them, so I don’t make resolutions. I do ask the Father always to help me be the person He desires and has made me to be. This is a daily prayer. Make it a priority to see what God would have you do and live by His plan rather than your own. This is a verse I have hanging in my office that is a good reminder:

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me; Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me,” (Psalm 51:10-12).

This is my prayer for the new year. What is yours?

What to look for in January

Regular Wednesday nights resume January 4 at 6:00 p.m. That first AWANA of the new year will be “bring a friend night” and store, so get ready!

    Family Nerf Games

Get ready for a FUN night for all ages, Friday, January 27 at 6:30 p.m. – it’s right around the corner! Invite friends and neighbors. Bring your own Nerf gun; we will supply foam bullets. Also bring a snack to share. We will provide water and popcorn.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace,” (Numbers 6:24-26).
